What is a Dachshund?

Breed Group:  Hounds
Weight:  4-11 Mini - 12-15 Tweenie - 16-32 Standard
Height:

Color(s):  red, black, chocolate, sable, wheaten, wild boar or cream; black and tan, black and Cream, blue and tan, chocolate and tan, wild boar and tan, gray and tan, or fawn (Isabella) and tan.

Patterns: Brindle, Brindle Piebald, Dapple, Dapple Piebald, Double Dapple and Piebald

Coat:  Can be smooth, long, or wire-haired.  The hairs on the Wire-haired Dachshund should lie flat and be as hard as possible.
Overview:  The Dachshund has a lively, upbeat personality.  He is spunky, curious and friendly. "Dachshund" means "badger dog" in German.
Character:  The Dachshund is brave, intelligent and independent.
Temperament:  This breed forms a strong bond with its family; however, it can be very courageous around other dogs.  I have found that socialization with other humans as well as other animals has done wonders for that somewhat reserved dachshund.

By the time a puppy is four to five weeks old the dachshunds personality is apparent.  By watching the puppies react with littermates and other dogs I have been able to tell whether a puppy is dominant or submissive.

Care:  The Smooth and Long-haired Dachshund should be brushed occasionally to remove dead hairs. Wire-haired Dachshund can be stripped.
Training:  If you plan to train your dachshund, please find a reputable dog trainer.  Dachshunds have a mind of their own so, you as the owner need to be trained first if you want a well trained dog.
Activity:  Dachshunds are active and full of mischief.  Make sure you have secure areas for them to run and play.
